Monpura island in Bangladesh lights up with solar mini-grids

Bangladesh – A joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resource has been successful in bringing electricity to 1,199 households in Monpura island…

We are delighted that ARE recognized IDCOL’s mini-grids projects as key to expanding energy access in Bangladesh and elsewhere. As we have seen on the ground, innovative solar mini-grids projects are relatively easy to install, operate and maintain, and bring multiple benefits to local communities. The Monpura Island project is a great showcase for it.

Rising Regulatory Risk Halts Mexican Private Power Investments

The guidelines announced on May 15th by the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER) as a way to preserve grid reliability and safety, may restrict and ultimately undermine private energy investment, strengthening the market share and voice of state-owned utility Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE, rated BBB-/Stable), according to Fitch…

India co-opts solar grid to fend off OBOR’s shadow

India has invited bids from consultants to make an ambitious cross-border power grid plan that would seek to transfer solar power generated in one region to feed the electricity demands of others. A request for proposals (RFP) prepared by India’s ministry of new and renewable energy for inviting consultants to develop a long-term roadmap for…

This is by far one of the most ambitious schemes undertaken by any country and is of global significance in terms of sharing economic benefits.

Wave, Wind, and PV: Floating Ocean Hybrid Platform

Starting this summer, SINN Power will offer solar panel manufacturers the opportunity to demonstrate and test their photovoltaic modules on a floating platform in Iraklio, Greece. The goal is to internationalize SINN Power’s ocean hybrid platform as a complete off-grid energy solution to provide people near coasts worldwide with renewable…

SINN Power is the first to offer a customizable energy solution using waves, small wind, and PV according to climatic conditions of any location and at competitive prices compared to other proven technologies.

Telecom Giant, Vodafone, Announces Partnership With Energy Blockchain Startup, Energy Web

In an official statement released Tuesday, EW confirmed its partnership with the London based telecommunications giant to incorporate IoT and blockchain in building secure IDs for energy assets. The project will use SIM centric blockchain tech (SCB) in a bid to provide a platform for users to quickly map and access their distributed assets on…

We are seeing the convergence of multiple sectors in making the energy transition happen — the energy sector, of course, but also automotive, telecoms, and even finance. From our perspective, the energy sector can only evolve so fast and so far without taking into account IoT connectivity.

New rules pave the way for off-grid renewables to replace poles and wires

Homes and businesses at the fringe of the grid will be able to access renewable energy from their electricity network under new rules devised by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) that allow utilities to replace costly and lengthy poles and wires with stand-alone power systems (SPS). Customers in bushfire, cyclone, or flood-prone areas…

Power Grid Simulation Testbed for Transactive Energy Management Systems

To effectively engage demand-side and distributed energy resources (DERs) for dynamically maintaining the electric power balance, the challenges of controlling and coordinating building equipment and DERs on a large scale must be overcome. Although several control techniques have been proposed in the literature, a significant…

Q&A: how plastics innovation can spur on renewables with SABIC

Scientists have calculated that 22kWh are required to produce a kg of plastic, four times the amount of energy used to produce a kg of steel. Multiplied by the 359 million metric tonnes of plastic produced globally every year, it becomes evident that plastic manufacturing is responsible for a vast amount of the world’s CO2 emissions…

Advanced Power Transmission Technologies Increase Capacity, Expand Distribution Network in Asia

One strategy Asia is assessing to improve transmission capacity and grid reliability is advanced transmission technologies that promote efficient interconnection and sustainability. To enhance Asia’s energy transition, Black & Veatch is extending its Breakthrough Overhead Line Design® (BOLD) consultancy services to India, Indonesia…

An integrated power infrastructure takes advantage of a different generation, transmission, and distribution technologies to help utilities overcome the pitfalls of aging infrastructure assets while meeting rising customer demand for energy that is renewable and reliable.

New Energy Storage Tech Challenges Lithium Batteries but at What Cost?

Bill Gates is at it again. Through his investments in a group called Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), Gates is exploring new ways to store renewable energy. While many innovative companies are creating ways to generate energy, BEV is focused on technologies that will allow enough energy storage to supply the major power-grids with clean…

Hydropower plants to support solar and wind energy in West Africa

Hydropower plants can support solar and wind power, rather unpredictable by nature, in a climate-friendly manner. A new study in the scientific journal Nature Sustainability has now mapped the potential for such “solar-wind-water” strategies for West Africa: an important region where the power sector is still under development, and…

Countries in West Africa therefore now have the opportunity to plan this expansion according to strategies that rely on modern, climate-friendly energy generation. A completely different situation from Europe, where the power supply has been dependent on polluting power plants for many decades—which many countries now want to rid themselves of.

LG next to join Hedera Hashgraph’s DLT platform governing council

LG Electronics has joined the Hedera Governing Council, the body charged with overseeing governance of the Hedera Hashgraph distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform. The council is designed to enable “the most decentralized governance model for a public ledger”. LG will work with Hedera and other members of the council to identify ways…

Our hope is to introduce an early version of Novi when the Libra network is available. We’ll roll it out in an initial set of countries, with features that will make cross-border money transfers instant, secure, and with no hidden fees.

Just How Good An Investment Is Renewable Energy? New Study Reveals All

Renewable energy investments are delivering massively better returns than fossil fuels in the U.S., the U.K. and Europe, but despite this the total volume of investment is still nowhere near that required to mitigate climate change. Those are some of the findings of new research released today by Imperial College London and the International…

It is not surprising that many investors still consider the renewable power sector as a nascent area. There are too few pure-play companies, too little information about those companies, and relatively short trading histories. While there is a body of literature developing on the specific investment risk factors associated with renewable energy, the body of empirical evidence remains limited.
