The Energy Bit attended the Asean Sustainable Energy Week in Bangkok, Thailand. I had the opportunity to sit down with the CEO of thingnario, Cardy Huang, who gave us some insight into Intelligent Software Solutions in the energy industry. Cardy is a great guy and it was a delight to converse with him. The future of renewable energy solutions strongly relies on these software providers, who really don’t get much public attention. Could you briefly explain the thingnario business model and its benefits?

Thingnario provides intelligent and scalable energy enterprise solutions based on machine learning and computer vision. We specialize in PV O&M (photovoltaics observations and measurements) management service and a tool for machine intelligence OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) monitoring, with state-of-the-art technology. The idea is to enhance the system and manpower working efficiency and predictive maintenance. Our vision is to bridge and transform industrial domain expertise into software professionals for business innovation.

At what stage is your company’s development currently at? What are the next steps?

Our renewable energy product, PHOTON, has been available for a year and is currently expanding to overseas markets such as Japan and Thailand. Since PHOTON has been quite a complete product with useful AI smart detection features to reduce manpower significantly, we are looking for integrations with the energy storage systems to provide a total solution.

What has been the most challenging aspect of PHOTON product development? Are you planning on integrating it into additional areas?

Rather than developing and designing, the most challenging thing we think for PHOTON is probably promoting it to the market. As we see it, the software could be really crucial from a maintenance point of view. However, the quality and stability of the software are absolutely unknown until the customer installs and practices their daily work with it. We get a lot of feedback from customers saying that they spent a fortune and effort to purchase and install invalid software systems while it claims something else. Therefore, we encourage our users to give PHOTON a try: install and try PHOTON in their daily work to see the differences.

Where do you see the development of battery and PV technology going over the next 5 years?

We do think the coming of energy storage on PV plant markets is inevitable. it makes sense that energy storage acts as a buffer in electrical power grids to ease the fluctuation of the output from renewable energy sources. Therefore, we do see the integrations of BMS (building management system) and EMS ( energy management system) is essential.

Do you have any direct competitors?

Yes, we do. Companies such as Meteocontrol and PVGuard, both from Germany. However, the target audiences are slightly different.

Where are the product areas you are looking to expand to? Why?

We are currently looking at Japan and Thailand. This is because of their government policy and the current stage of the PV market in general.

Will AI and machine learning play a major role in the future of our society?

It’s really a big question. Generally speaking, once fully developed and applied, it would replace most of the repetitive work for sure. We have some interesting times ahead of us.
